Black Mountain Institute at UNLV champions writers and storytellers through programs, fellowships and community engagement. We make space for meaningful collaborations and conversations; we understand service as vital. We ask questions about access, the environment, and labor. We find our home in Las Vegas–a place of hospitality in the middle of a desert. Between the manufactured and natural, urban and wide expanse, built and rebuilt, bounty and scarcity, we live within narratives of destruction and preservation. From the brightest spot on the planet, Black Mountain Institute amplifies writing and artistic expression to connect us to each other in the Las Vegas Valley, the Southwest, and beyond.

The Migration, Demography, and Population Studies Center Initiative developed out of a collaborative discussion among the UNLV faculty regarding the importance of migration and demographic change to the evolving population dynamics and growth of the states in the Mountain West Region. At present, there is no interdisciplinary research center devoted to the broad study of migration, demography, and population change at the institutions of higher education in the Mountain West.

Housed in UNLV’s College of Liberal Arts, The University Forum Lecture Series was founded in 1985, by then-Dean Thomas Wright. The basic idea was to bring intellectual and artistic talent from across the country to Las Vegas and the UNLV campus in order to share ideas and thereby enrich the lives of the citizens whose taxes support us. Since that time the series has never missed a semester in offering a dozen or more public lectures to the community. Indeed, today speakers no longer come just from across the country but from around the world, sharing ideas, adventures, performances and insights with our students as well as with our fellow Las Vegans.

The Writing Center is sponsored by both the College of Liberal Arts and the English department. Consultants, usually English graduate students and instructors, assist students, staff, and faculty with any stage of the writing process, from generating ideas to polishing final drafts. The Writing Center is not a proofreading service. The center teaches writers how to make positive changes in their writing skills and how to diagnose and correct their own writing problems.
