James Frey retired on June 30, 2004 after having spent 30 years at UNLV, the last seven of which he served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. As a valuable member of the Department of Sociology and department chair, James Frey influenced many liberal arts students who studied under him. In addition, his guidance to graduate students in Sociology was profound. His dedication to those graduate students is represented by the creation of this endowment.
The James Frey Graduate Student Research Scholarship shall be used to assist Department of Sociology graduate students with their research and professional activity such as, awards for thesis projects, travel and research.
The annual James Frey Graduate Student Research Scholarship shall be awarded to student(s) meeting the following criteria:
- Student must be an admitted, full time graduate student;
- Student must be majoring in sociology;
- Student must forward a completed application packet for review to the Department of Sociology’s Graduate Committee Chair. An announcement will be placed by the Department of Sociology that specifies the application requirements that include, but are not limited to, a statement of purpose, an outline of your research project, copies of unofficial graduate transcripts, and a current CV.
Recipients may be eligible for this scholarship in subsequent years, provided they maintain the award criteria and pending funding availability.
*Unless otherwise noted, all students who fill out a FAFSA or alternate need form and meet the criteria for the scholarship will be considered. No other application is needed.
*Selected award winner’s name is due to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office by December 1st.
