Dr. Andrew J. E. (“Andy”) Bell, an Associate Professor of History at the time of his passing, was a beloved teacher, scholar, and friend to many. An Englishman, proud of his Yorkshire roots and a graduate of Bradford Grammar School; Brasenose College, Oxford; and Stanford University; Dr. Bell was a classicist by training but a polymath by inclination and habit, an insatiable, wide-ranging reader. A vegetarian all his adult life, he loved animals of every sort, from stick insects and toads to hedgehogs, and donkeys, his beloved dog Tops as a boy and his four cats in Las Vegas. Known across UNLV for his passion, his wit, his suits and ties, and his colorful socks, he was admired by the thousands of students whose lives he touched with his exemplary teaching and mentoring. Dr. Bell will be forever missed but his indomitable spirit lives on in his students, the family he so loved, and the scholarship that bears his name.
