The mission of UNLV’s Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is to ensure that all potentially hazardous biological materials utilized at UNLV facilities are given appropriate review and oversight, and to promote the practice of safe biological research for the protection of UNLV faculty, staff, students, and visitors.

The UNLV IBC is responsible for oversight of university policies and procedures regarding use of potentially hazardous biological materials on campus, including recombinant DNA, infectious materials, human materials, and toxins.

All institutional biosafety committees, including the UNLV IBC, are charged under the with providing local review and oversight of research utilizing recombinant DNA. UNLV has chosen to expand the IBC duties to include reviewing all research involving biohazards conducted at UNLV facilities.
