The Intersection and The Office of Undergraduate Research First-Generation Research Fellowship

The Intersection and the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) First-Generation Research Fellowship is generously funded by The Intersection and managed by OUR. With an annual budget of $6,000, the fellowship promotes and supports first-generation undergraduates’ involvement in undergraduate research in any academic field. More specifically, these fellowships aim to cultivate intellectual inquiry and critical thinking through research.

Eligibility, Application Process, and Requirements

Currently enrolled first-generation UNLV undergraduate students (first in the family to attend and graduate from a college or university) with a declared major who are working with a full-time NSHE faculty research mentor are eligible for consideration.

Students are required to submit the following as part of their application package:

  1. One-page personal statement detailing the research which the applicant plans to undertake. For more instructions, please peruse OUR’s one-page personal statement sample.
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV). For instructions, please view the following samples:

3. Institutional Review Board (IRB) / Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) (if applicable)

UNLV faculty research mentors are required to submit a letter of support to our@unlv.edu.

Successful fellows are expected to meet the requirements listed below:

  • Attend the following workshops offered by OUR’s Research Skills Academy:
    • What is Research? Understanding the Research Process
    • Active Reading: How to Effectively Interrogate Text
    • Research Writing: The Abstract
    • Research Writing: The Introduction
    • Research Writing: How to Write a Literature Review
    • Research Writing: The Results, Discussion, and Conclusion
  • Submit a final research summary document to our@unlv.edu prior to October 1 of the awarded year.
  • Present at one of OUR’s triannual research symposia.
  • Acknowledge The Intersection, the Office of Undergraduate Research, and the First-Generation Fellowship on all relevant presentations and publications.
