The first new U.S. air carriers in 14 years are vying for a slice of air travel’s rebound as the industry emerges from its worst downturn in history.

Passengers on board a United Airlines flight from Denver to Honolulu had several moments of terror on Feb. 20 when their plane, a Boeing 777-200, experienced a right-engine failure shortly after takeoff, causing a massive bang and sending debris raining down over a quiet Denver suburb. Passengers captured video, much of it shared on social media, of the plane’s Pratt and Whitney engine, its cover ripped off, its turbine oscillating and in flames. The plane, which had 231 passengers and 10 crew members on board, returned to Denver and landed safely.

Commercial air travel has come a long way since the “Golden Age of Travel” — an era marked by glamour, gourmet food and dapper passengers.

On the night of November 15, 1964, the Fairchild F-27A , prefix N745L , by Bonanza Air Lines , departed for flight 114, from Phoenix, Arizona, to McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, taking on board 26 passengers and three crew.

“It was terrifying. It was very scary, very deep and very dark,” said Dr. David Conlin about his first dive to the B-29 Superfortress bomber that rests at the bottom of Lake Mead.

For 70 years, a B-29 Superfortress bomber has rested peacefully in 100-plus-feet-deep water in Lake Mead. With the exception of a few visits by research team members and qualified divers, the plane has remained unseen by the public.

It all started with a conversation between siblings 10 years apart.
