Jaimi Garlington (Hospitality), Cass Shum (Hospitality), Gloria Wong-Padoongpatt (Psychology), and Laura Book (Hospitality) recently published their paper, “'," in the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. The paper questions the practice of racial code-switching, defined as "an impression management behavior for people to blend into social and professional situations by adhering to norms outside their own." Drawing on the identity threat perspective, the research demonstrates the harmful effects of racial code-switching, in terms of depression and hospitality industry turnover intention. Garlington is a hospitality Ph.D. student.
