David Candelas, Rebekah D'Amato, Chelsea Heinbach, Starr Hoffman, Bibiana Lopez, Eduardo Martinez-Flores, Amanda Melilli, Rosan Mitola, and Amy Tureen (all Libraries) presented at the American Library Association's Annual Conference & Exhibition 2019 in Washington, D.C.
Tureen and Melilli presented “” to a packed house during the conference. Their presentation explored methods by which new managers can enhance resilience, reduce stress, and practice mindfulness.
Hoffman and Tureen, along with collaborators Erick Lemon (Medical University of South Carolina), Joyce Martin (Arizona State University), Willie Miller (Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis), and Mindy Thuna (University of Toronto), presented their poster “Virtual Cohorts as a Team Building and Problem Solving Tool." Building upon the skill sets and team building initially developed at Harvard University’s Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in summer 2018, the researchers spent the past year regularly sharing case studies of their own leadership challenges and meeting via video chat to discuss current professional challenges, and receive the feedback and support from fellow peer leaders.
Mitola moderated a panel discussion, “Stay on Target!: Stellar Practices for Strategic Outreach through Collaborations, Marketing, and Peer Leaders” with Martinez-Flores, a Flora and Stuart Mason Undergraduate Peer Research Coach in the University Libraries, and colleagues from Illinois Institute of Technology, Lynn University, and John Carroll University serving as panelists. Martinez-Flores discussed his experiences working in the peer coach program and how the peer coaches contribute to outreach activities at UNLV.
Ramos-Candelas, D'Amato, Heinbach, Lopez, Martinez-Flores, and Mitola, presented the poster, For First-gens by First-gens: A Student Led, Strengths-based Study to Guide Teaching and Outreach Practices in Academic Libraries. Ramos-Candelas, D'Amato, Lopez, and Martinez-Flores, are Flora and Stuart Mason Undergraduate Peer Research Coaches in the University Libraries. Fellow peer coach Priscilla Gutierrez also co-authored the poster.
