Traffic Safety Research

Improving traffic safety in Nevada through evidence-based research to inform injury prevention and advocacy initiatives.

ҳ| 鶹ýӳ

The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV strives for excellence in preserving the health and well-being of Nevadans and through research, it brings new knowledge to treat and prevent disease and injury.

The main priority of the traffic safety research group is to help improve Nevada’s traffic safety for all road users. To do this, we partnered with all Nevada trauma centers verified by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety (NV-OTS) to compile, link, maintain, and analyze Nevada information on traffic stops, citations, crashes, injuries, and outcomes of those injured. Research findings are then shared with the public via social media infographics, fact sheets, newsletters, presentations, publications, reports, and data dashboards. Our staff utilizes these unique data sets to identify priority areas for injury prevention, to identify and address disparities, and to inform legislative initiatives that will impact the safety of Nevada road users.

The traffic safety research group is also active in the evaluation of existing prevention and intervention programs throughout Nevada. Evaluation is an integral part of any program, and we help organizations develop and implement tools for assessing program implementation and effectiveness, as well as to help in analyzing program results. By aiding in evaluation, we can help improve the efficacy of existing prevention and intervention programs, tailoring them to the unique needs of Nevada communities.

Community Partnerships

It takes a village – which is why the medical school’s traffic safety research team joins a number of key safety partners all dedicated to improving the safety of our communities. We greatly appreciate all the support from our partners and thank them for their commitment to traffic safety in Nevada. We are humbled to work alongside the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, the Nevada Department of Transportation, University Medical Center (UMC), Sunrise Hospital, Renown Hospital, St. Rose Hospital, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, UNLV’s Transportation Research Center, and many others to help protect the welfare of Nevadans as they travel on our roads. We cannot express enough gratitude for the hard work and dedication our community partners offer. From the statistics they help us gather, to the medical services they provide, and the countless hours of education and advocacy, our community partners never let us down. It takes a village to come together to save just one life and we are devoted to saving many more in Nevada.
