Learning Communities were implemented in July of 2023 with our incoming class of 2027. By the year 2026, each of our four learning communities will include a diverse group of students from all four classes. Learning Communities will not only support students socially, but will also support our students' education through structured mentorship and professionalism opportunities during all four years of their medical education.

Student Organizations

The American Medical Student Association is a student-led national organization that aims to inform and inspire students to reshape medicine. AMSA's vision is a "world where health care is accessible, medicine is affordable and systems support the diversity we see around us." The organization has existed for 70 years and consists of 30,000 members globally. AMSA helps students advocate for change with primary focuses on health policy, race, ethnicity and culture in health, gender and sexuality action, wellness and student life, community and public health, environmental health, global health, and medical education. The organization provides the platform and resources students need to create change in the national setting.

With more than 150 chapters in medical schools around the US, AMSA inspires a community of future physicians through education and advocacy.

AMSA Partners

The American Medical Women’s Association empowers women to lead in improving health for all within a model that reflects the unique perspective of women. Nationally, AMWA membership is comprised of physicians, residents, medical students, pre-medical students, health care professionals, and supporters. AMWA is the oldest multispecialty organization dedicated to advancing women in medicine and improving women’s health. The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV’s first official branch was nationally approved on August 31, 2017.

The American Medical Women’s Association is an organization which functions at the local, national, and international level to advance women in medicine and improve women’s health. AMWA achieves this by providing and developing leadership, advocacy, education, expertise, mentoring, and strategic alliances. We bring together those in medicine and health-related fields to promote women’s health and to support members’ professional and personal development.

The American Medical Association is the largest association of physicians and medical students in the United States, and holds the mission of “promoting the art and science of medicine and the betterment of public health.” The AMA is an ally in patient care and gives strength to physician voices in courts and legislative bodies across the nation. It is dedicated to driving medicine toward a more equitable future, removing obstacles that interfere with patient care and confronting the nation’s greatest public health crises. The Medical Student Section (MSS) strives to be the medical students' leading voice for improving medical education and advocating for the future of medicine.

APAMSA is a national organization of medical and pre-medical students committed to addressing the unique health challenges of Asian and Pacific Islander American communities. APAMSA serves as a forum for student leaders to engage in health issues and develop initiatives and projects addressing the needs of the community. APAMSA provides a venue for medical students to meet, exchange experiences, and develop personally and professionally through leadership and service.

The AWS student chapter at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine was founded to enhance the interaction and exchange of information between women and surgeons to help individuals achieve their professional and personal goals. This is an international organization with chapters throughout the U.S., Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Canada.

The student chapter of the Catholic Medical Association is an organization committed to understanding principles of the Catholic faith and how they apply to the call of practicing medicine. Our mission is to provide opportunities to discuss the joy, truth, and beauty of our Catholic faith, promote ecumenical dialogue with people of all religions, and foster friendship and fellowship among medical and dental students to build a close, faithful community in medicine.

The Christian Medical and Dental Association educates, encourages, and equips Christian healthcare professionals to glorify God by being the "hands and feet of Jesus" to needy people. Through fellowship with medical and dental students alike, CMDA creates a community for individuals to navigate the intersection between faith and medicine.

Cooking may be the farthest thing from many medical students’ minds, when time is short and fast food is well, fast. The cooking club however, is populated by medical students who see cooking as a way to relax, improve the quality of the food they eat, and occasionally show off their culinary skills in monthly contests. Although not a service organization specifically, club members occasionally provide tasty surprises for the student body at the School of Medicine. One thing is certain: medical students are always hungry.

The Financial Success Club is geared towards educating medical students of the financial principles necessary to succeed in their business and personal finances. Through meetings and guest speakers, club members will be taught financial strategies relevant to the transition from medical school to residency and beyond, including topics such as general investing, insurance, employment contracts, loan repayment, and retirement.

The FGLIMed student organization at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine is a collective organization of medical students who aim to advocate for students in medicine who are first-generation college graduates and/or from low-income backgrounds. These students are traditionally underrepresented in medicine and face unique challenges in their pursuit of practicing medicine. We are a support system, a networking collective, and a mentoring group. Our mission is to increase the number of FGLI students who successfully develop a career in medicine, and to provide resources and networking opportunities that will foster collegial relationships between physicians, medical trainees, and pre-medical students.

An organization focused on global health issues, migrant and refugee health, founded at the Kerkorian School of Medicine. HOPE aims to raise awareness on and advocate for global health issues, serve the refugee and migrant population in Southern Nevada, and support underserved populations abroad.

A student-run organization focused on the needs of Latino(a) students and increasing access of care for underserved communities, as well as increasing the number of Latino(a) medical students entering and completing medical school. The club serves as a place for veteran students and health professions' military scholarship recipients to connect and support one another through medical school. The group holds events throughout the year, including invited guest speakers, open houses for prospective applicants who are also veterans, resident appreciation events, and other outreach for veterans groups, on campus and in the community.

Medical Students for Choice is an organization that is committed to ensuring that women receive the full range of reproductive healthcare choices. As medical students, we work to incorporate comprehensive abortion and family planning education in our training. Our UNLV MSFC chapter provides hands-on opportunities for learning, such as clinical skills workshops and lectures by physicians in the field of reproductive and women’s health.

The Medical Research Society helps students find available research opportunities and improve their knowledge and abilities to do clinical and basic science research. Research doesn't have to be a struggle. Join our group and hear workshop solutions to common problems such as how to find the best research mentor/project, how to publish a manuscript, or how to write a CV. Research can improve your chances of being a more competitive applicant while advancing the field of science. It's something that is important for any specialty you may choose. The MRS will help you gain confidence in your abilities to do research and publish your hard work.

MEDSPEAK is a student service group that conducts medical and health-related presentations for the community. Topics range from reading nutrition labels to healthcare careers, and anatomy. They have worked with a number of organizations, the most active partnerships being with the Clark County School District and the Southern Nevada Boys and Girls Clubs.

The primary missions of the Middle Eastern and South Asian Medical Student Association (MESAMSA) include (1) raising awareness of Middle-Eastern and South Asian health among the medical community, (2) engaging in sustained community service activities and (3) increasing the opportunities in the medical field for students of Middle-Eastern and South Asian descent. Many of these students are either immigrants themselves or children of immigrants and face unique obstacles in navigating the path to pursuing a medical career, as they are more-than-likely the first in their families to do so. MESAMSA provides opportunities for service, medical education, and mentorship with current medical students and local physicians.

The Outdoors Club encourages students of all skill levels to explore the wealth of options in the Las Vegas and surrounding areas. Our mission is simple— to get outdoors! With easy access to hiking trails, biking and climbing routes, camping, national parks, and much more, UNLV-SOM is ideally located to help students fulfill this mission. We believe that exposure to nature is essential to the physical and mental well-being of our members. In addition to regular physical activities, the Outdoors Club hosts an annual campout to engage students in the natural world around Las Vegas.

Phi Delta Epsilon is an international professional medical fraternity whose mission is to create physicians of integrity with a lifelong commitment to our guiding principles of philanthropy, deity, and education. We were founded on the idea that anyone with enough passion and integrity can be a physician, and that all physicians and patients should be treated equally. Our chapter hopes to foster a genuine supportive “PhiDE Family” environment. Our future goals include formally establishing our Big/Little mentorship program and founding “families”, continue our work with our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.

Qlub Med was created to provide professional and personal support to LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff while working to improve healthcare for LGBTQ+ individuals both locally and outside of Las Vegas. Qlub Med seeks to foster an inclusive culture at the Kerkorian School of Medicine, connect LGBTQ+ mentors with students, and encourage community service opportunities related to LGBTQ+ issues. We also seek to train and educate healthcare providers and students both informally and formally on topics pertaining to the unique needs of LGBTQ+ individuals.

Running Club is a group of students who stay active and have fun through running! We motivate each other (because let’s be honest, staying active is hard in medical school), go on weekend group runs, and participate in organized races together (5ks, 10ks, etc). All paces and faces are welcome!
