At Public Radio KUNV, we appreciate donations in any amount.
Types of Memberships
General Membership
General Membership benefits include:
- Subscription to the KUNV monthly e-bulletin, with station news, member information, and details about upcoming station events
- Access to KUNV events
- The satisfaction of knowing your contribution helps ensure Public Radio KUNV remains a valuable community resource
KUNV Sustaining Membership
The KUNV Sustaining Membership provides the station with our most reliable source of income. Since you will have opted for a monthly recurring donation, you ensure that more of your contribution goes directly to funding the shows that are important to you. KUNV Sustainers save us administrative time and money because we don’t need to send out reminders in the mail, or solicitations throughout the year. Many of our donors make a monthly gift of $5 to $50.
KUNV Sustainers are eligible for all our general membership benefits. Additionally, we like to offer KUNR Sustainers additional benefits that include:
- Automatic entry into all KUNV giveaways
- Behind-the-scenes station tours by appointment
- Special recognition at KUNV events
- Special on-air recognition
Additional Support Opportunities
Your gift to KUNV Radio demonstrates your commitment to public radio broadcast and journalism media students at UNLV, and your employer may share these same values. Many companies offer employees, and sometimes spouses and retirees, a matching gift benefit that doubles or triples their donations to KUNV Radio.
Your donation to KUNV Radio is part of the UNLV foundation. In the past, local and national companies made matching gift donations through the UNLV Foundation totaling more than $60,000. To find out if your company will match your gift to UNLV, search our online database for matching gift details. If you do not see your company on this list, your company may still match your donation to KUNV. For any questions about gift matching, please call UNLV Foundation Annual Giving office at 702-895-2851 or email annualgiving@unlv.edu.
Companies have various methods by which you can submit your matching gift request: online forms, automated phone systems, or paper forms. Visit your human resources office to learn more about how your company can match your gift to KUNV.
If you prefer, you can email matching gift paper forms to annualgiving@unlv.edu. You may also send matching gift forms for processing to the UNLV Foundation:

Giving publicly traded stock could be a tax-wise way to support KUNV Radio. For appreciated securities held longer than one year, you may be able to deduct their full fair market value, regardless of what you originally paid for them. You also may avoid paying capital gains tax. If you are interested in making a gift of securities to KUNV, please contact Senior Associate Vice President of Finance & Administration and CFO Tiffany Vickers at 702-895-3641 or tiffany.vickers@unlv.edu.

While cash gifts have many advantages, a donor may also wish to consider giving other types of assets to KUNV.
Appreciated Property
Gifts of certain types of appreciated assets, such as securities and real estate, are very popular and may provide the donor with even greater tax benefit if held long term (more than one year) than a gift of a comparable amount of cash. While the donor continues to benefit from a charitable deduction for the full, fair-market value of the gift, there may be an additional benefit if the tax on the unrealized gain in the gifted property is avoided.

Personal Property
Donors may also choose to gift an item of personal property, such as art works or special collections, books, and rare and unique items. Provided the gift asset is used for the university’s charitable purposes, the full market value of such a gift is deductible for the donor; otherwise, it is limited to its adjusted cost basis. Before the university can accept a gift of property, KUNV must ascertain that the type of gift is consistent with the mission and purposes of the institution.
Due to the favorable tax treatment of gifts of tangible personal property, with proper planning, such a gift may result in a larger capital gains tax savings than other long-term appreciated property. Our staff is available to work with your advisors on planning such a gift so you realize the maximum tax benefits.
Gifts-in-kind, sometimes referred to as non-monetary gifts and written as GIK, are of substantial value to KUNV Radio. Many times, donated items or services enhance KUNV’s mission without direct cost to the university. Gifts of this type may include specialized equipment for student and research use; audio collections for use in the KUNV libraries; professional services generally budgeted as a broadcasting expense; and other non monetary items used in campus facilities, operations, or academic settings.
These gifts are often tax-deductible as donations to KUNV Radio and UNLV; however, gifts-of-service may be subject to different IRS tax regulations, and each gift is accepted and considered with this in mind. Before the university and KUNV Radio can accept a gift-in-kind, KUNV Radio and UNLV must ascertain that the type of gift is consistent with the mission and purposes of the institution:
- Is it relevant to the work of KUNV Radio? As a general rule, only gifts that further the work of departments and programs at the university can be accepted.
- Does the donor’s intent match the interests of the university and KUNV Radio?
- Will the gift cost KUNV money in the future, such as maintenance, repair, or preservation costs?
- Will the gift require a special facility in which to house it?
- If the property cannot be used within KUNV’s programming, will you allow it to be sold? In general, if you, as the donor, place a condition on the gift that it is not to be sold, the university cannot accept the gift.
In partnership with a member of the UNLV Foundation development team, there are additional guidelines to consider when submitting your documentation for a GIK:
- All donations received are required to have a receipt or a memo listing the fair market value (FMV) of the donation.
- Copies of all supporting materials, including letters, certificates, tickets, etc., should be included as part of the donation for tracking and substantiation purposes.
- A copy of the GIK forms should be kept for your records as well as provided to the UNLV Foundation for our accounting purposes.
If you have any questions about gifts-in-kind or gifts-of-service or have questions about how to give this type of gift, please call the UNLV Foundation at 702-895-3641.
