Taking or sending a student abroad may be in the form of a faculty-led international program, a student attending a conference with or without faculty, a student accompanying faculty to conduct research or doing so independently, student and faculty attending a performance or performing, and much more. If there is any way a student being abroad can be linked to you and UNLV, you need to work with the Office of International Programs (or, at the very least, have the student meet with International Programs).
International activities which include students are subject to a wide range of UNLV and NSHE policies which have been developed to assure academic quality, compliance with health and safety standards, State Department recommendations, and other administrative regulations. All new international projects and programs for students are developed based on long term strategic planning and are subject to the administrative approval processes of UNLV and NSHE.

If you are considering creating a new international program, follow these guidelines and reach out to international.programs@unlv.edu at least 6 months prior to proposed travel.
UNLV Policy on International Activities
UNLV faculty and staff activities with an international component which includes students or accompanying guests must contact the Office of International Programs during the initial planning stages for information regarding UNLV and NSHE policies for foreign study, research, or travel. UNLV employees have a contractual obligation to comply with UNLV policies and the NSHE Code.
The Office of International Programs is the centralized academic support unit which assists UNLV in the planning and development of cooperative agreements, programs abroad, faculty exchange, field study projects, and other initiatives which foster internationalization. Faculty or staff considering the development of new programs must contact International Programs or call 702-895-3896.
Failure to work within UNLV and NSHE policies for the development and approval of international travel may result in employee noncompliance with institutional policy. Employees may not be provided institutional support for any professional or legal consequences arising out of such activities and may be the sole responsibility of the faculty or staff member.
Each year the Office of International Programs requests applications from full time tenured and tenure track faculty members who are interested in teaching abroad through the . USAC offers the opportunity for UNLV faculty to be a visiting professor during the summer or for a semester. UNLV faculty teach courses that supplement the students' core curriculum in academic areas that complement the program's focus. UNLV faculty can teach in a wide variety of academic disciplines for USAC programs.
Several programs offer intensive language study taught by faculty from the host institution abroad. Visiting UNLV faculty have the option of enrolling in the intensive language programs in most locations.

It is important that faculty and universities across the continents cooperate to produce research and other collaborative output. General Agreements for Cooperation between UNLV and an international university or other educational institution are formal contracts facilitated by the Office of International and Programs and UNLV General Counsel. They should be entered into with strategic, long term purpose and only with the approval of your chair and dean. To formalize a relationship between your school/college and an institution abroad, the first step is to arrange a meeting between you, your chair, your associate dean and/or dean, and the Executive Director of International Programs, Marty Bennett.
