Benefit eligible employees are able to take advantage of a variety of voluntary benefit programs. Most are available through payroll deduction and would be in addition to your regular health insurance premium. Enrollment with Public Employee Benefits Program (PEBP) health insurance is not required to enroll in any of these products.

Voluntary Benefits

UNLV part of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) offers several voluntary benefits options to its employees. Many of the optional plans are available through payroll deduction, and enrollment can be completed through the Benefits Application on your desktop:

Cancer Care Insurance

NSHE offers three cancer insurance plans for employees through. Plans are available to employees under age 65 who have not previously been diagnosed as having cancer. All plans will provide coverage for the actual charges incurred by a covered person for the treatment of cancer, leukemia, or Hodgkins disease. Employee and family plans are available.

Flexible Spending Account

Enrollment into this plan is available during the initial hire, during the annual Open Enrollment Event, or if there is a mid-year qualifying event.

Flexible Spending Accounts are offered to any benefit eligible employees, regardless of accepting medical insurance or not. FSA’s allow participants to use pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible expenses for self and tax dependents that are both covered and not covered under your health insurance plan. Eligible expenses include co-payments, coinsurance, deductibles, physician office visits, most prescriptions, glasses, contacts, and dental visits. The FSA plan operates on a fiscal year plan (July 1 – June 30). Any contribution amounts that are not used by the end of the plan year are forfeited to the NSHE plan as required by IRS regulations.

FSA Plan Options

Medical FSA

The Medical FSA provides participants the opportunity to use funds deducted from their paycheck to cover out of pocket medical, prescription, dental and vision expenses. This product is separate from the Health Savings Account (HSA) that is offered by the Public Employee’s Benefits Program (PEBP) part of the PPO – High Deductible Consumer Driven Health Plan.

Limited FSA

Participants enrolled in the limited scope FSA are allowed to use pre-tax funds for dental and vision expenses only. All other medical expenses are eligible for payment through the HSA.

Dependent Care FSA

The dependent care FSA provides participants the opportunity to have funds deducted on a pre-tax basis for tax dependent child(ren) under the age of 13, a parent or other elderly dependent, or a spouse who is mentally or physically incapable of caring for him or herself; allows participants to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible expenses, such as licensed nursery school, daycare center, care inside your home and eldercare.

Long Term Care Insurance -UNUM

Long-term care insurance is available to UNLV employees through UNUM. The product is available for NSHE employees and their extended family members.

The plan provides new hires a guarantee issue coverage. If enrolling after the guarantee issue coverage, employees will have to submit evidence of insurability.

Premiums are collected after-tax via payroll deduction.

Vision Care – VSP

The Vision Care – VSP plan is currently available to new hires, newly eligible participants and during open enrollment. Enrollment is available for 30 days from the date of eligibility.

Vision care gives you access to quality eye care and allows you to save on eyewear. By purchasing the Vision Care – VSP plan, you get additional benefits aside from your regular PEBP coverage.

UNLV offers discounted auto and home insurance through Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. In addition to auto and home coverage, Liberty Mutual also offers renter’s insurance, condo coverage, motorcycle, umbrella, and boat coverage. Payroll deduction is available with no down payment.

ID Theft Protection

Protect your personal and financial information from risk by purchasing the ID theft protection plan. This plan will monitor any suspicious activity and notify you as soon as potential fraud is discovered. Caring for your pet is made easier with pet insurance offered through the PEBP website for any NSHE employee. You are given an option between purchasing coverage through Nationwide or ASPCA.

Nationwide offers “My Pet Protection” plans to cover vet bills, with 90% reimbursement for accidents, illnesses, and more.

Accident insurance is helpful with sudden and often costly accidents. Even with health insurance, employees still would be responsible for copayments, coinsurance, and living expenses. The impact of an uncalled and sudden accident can have dire financial consequences. With accident insurance, employees receive a lump sum payment for covered events related to an accident that can help you cover those costs. Regardless of insurance coverage, accident insurance pays the benefit amount directly to employees. Accident insurance is available through two providers:

Critical Illness Insurance

Critical illness insurance pays employees a lump sum payment if they are diagnosed with a covered illness (including cancer). The critical illness insurance works in conjunction with any medical coverage, and will pay the amount of your benefit regardless of amount covered by the health insurance. Hospital Indemnity Insurance

Hospital indemnity insurance provides employees with a lump sum payment directly to you when experiencing a hospital admission, accident-related inpatient rehabilitation and hospital stay. The payment is regardless of health insurance coverage and is paid on a per day basis to help with not only hospital stays, but all other life events impacted by the hospitalization, the choice is yours. The payment can be used to help cover health care cost or for any purpose you choose to help ease the financial impact of hospitalization. The Standard offers voluntary long term disability insurance. While health insurance pays your doctor, disability insurance pays you — directly. Group Long Term Disability insurance pays a monthly benefit if you experience a disability that lasts for several months or years and meet the plan requirements.

Term Life Insurance

UNLV offers supplemental term life insurance for employees through two providers:

Western Insurance Specialties

 offers a guaranteed issue coverage of up to $150,000 for the employee and $50,000 for the employee's spouse/domestic partner, provided the employee applies for the guarantee issue within 60 days of date of hire. After that, employees will have to submit evidence of insurability for any amount of life insurance requested. Dependent children may be insured up to a maximum of $20,000 as long as either the employee or the spouse is also covered.

Western Insurance Specialties additionally offers Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance as an add-on to your life insurance. Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance can help you prepare for a sudden financial loss brought on by an accidental death. In the event of a severe physical loss due to an accident, the insurance will pay a benefit for you or a family member if applicable.

Standard Insurance

 offers a guaranteed issue coverage of up to $100,000 for the employee and $20,000 for the employee's spouse, provided the employee applies for the guarantee issue within 60 days of becoming eligible for the state health plan. After that, employees will have to submit evidence of insurability for any amount of life insurance requested. The Standard also offers university employees the option to purchase life insurance for dependent children under the age of 26.

The Standard offers Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance as part of a Group Life insurance policy. AD&D insurance will cover for you or a family member in the event of an accidental death or severe physical loss that results from an accident. The Standard offers AD&D as part of the supplemental life insurance election made by university employees.

Short-Term Disability

Short-term disability replaces a portion of your monthly income should you become disabled on a short-term basis. The plan provides benefits for up to 26 weeks, depending on the disability. Short-term disability is offered through two vendors: American Fidelity and Standard Insurance.

Additional Voluntary Benefits

The Future Path 529 College Fund, gives you a tax-advantaged, affordable, and easy way to save for higher education – for your children, your grandchildren, or even yourself. Plus, it offers benefits specific to Nevada residents.

You can enroll and open up an account with as little as $15 per month. You can use the assets at any eligible school around the country and abroad – not just in Nevada. That includes 2- and 4-year colleges, graduate schools (including law and medical) and vocational/technical schools. Funds can be used to pay for qualified expenses including tuition, fees, required books, supplies, and equipment, and certain room and board costs.
