Conference Travel Funding

Overview

Honors College (HC) students who have been invited to present their research at academic conferences can apply for HC funding to help pay for travel expenses. Amounts will vary up to $500 a semester, depending on the number and quality of applications, as well as the amount of funding available. As such, applying for Honors College conference travel funding does not guarantee the receipt of funding. The eligibility requirements, deadlines, and application process are detailed below.

Eligibility

  • In order to qualify for Honors College conference travel funding, students must be presenting research at an academic conference outside of Southern Nevada. 
  • The research being presented must have been conducted with or overseen by a UNLV or DRI faculty member. 
  • Applicants must be current undergraduate students enrolled in a UNLV program when applying for travel and at the time of travel. Funding will not be considered for students who will have graduated before the research conference.
  • Applicants must be current Honors College students who are in good academic standing (GPA of 3.3 or higher).
  • If applicable to the research project being presented, students must have documentation indicating the approval of and/or certification for the ethical conduct of research involving human subjects, including
    • UNLV IRB approval for research with human subjects
    • CITI Training Certificate
  • If applicable to the research being presented, students must have documentation indicating the approval and/or certification for the ethical and safe conduct of research, including
    • IACUC approval for research with live animals
    • Biosafety committee approval for research involving hazardous materials
    • RMS training for any lab based research

This is a competitive process. Preference will be given to HC students with an active research program and/or to HC students who have actively engaged in service and leadership activities in the Honors College and the larger UNLV community.

Funding Requirements

  • Applications for conference travel funding must be submitted at least 60 days prior to the date of travel.  
  • Students cannot apply for Honors College conference travel funding more than once a semester or more than once per conference. The maximum amount of HC travel funding permitted is $500 per student per conference per semester.
  • The Honors College only funds student conference travel that has been pre-approved. Reimbursement for travel that has already occurred but was not pre-approved is not permitted. 
  • Prior to applying for Honors College conference travel funding, students should seek other funding sources, including the Office of Undergraduate Research, CSUN, their discipline colleges, and their faculty research adviser. Additionally, travel to a research conference outside of the United States requires coordination with the Office of International Programs.
  • Eligible expenditures include airfare, ground transportation, lodging, and conference registration fees. 

Fraudulent Documentation Submission

All applications must be the original work of the applicant. Repeat or duplicate applications, and applications with sections duplicated from any other application, will not be considered for Honors College conference travel funding (even where individuals in a group are applying separately for their part in the same presentation). The presentation of false or otherwise incorrect information will lead to immediate disqualification of the application, suspension of any further Honors College funding, a freeze on any existing Honors College funds awarded, and the immediate repayment of any funds utilized toward the above mentioned travel. Additionally, the student will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct for further consideration.

Application Process

All applications for Honors College conference travel funding must be submitted through the . When completing the form online, you will be asked to upload the following documents: 

  • Your current resume/CV
  • A copy of your conference acceptance letter or email
  • Documentation of approvals/certifications when applicable for the ethical conduct of research (IRB, CITI, IACUC) and research safety (RMS)

Only complete applications that are submitted by the deadline will be considered. 


The Honors College conference travel funding committee will review the applications. Applicants will be notified via email of specific funding amounts. Students who receive Honors College conference travel funding will need to meet with Jessica Bradley (jessica.bradley@unlv.edu) before traveling to complete the required preauthorization forms. Students who fail to complete the proper preauthorization forms in advance of travel will forfeit the HC travel funding. Once travel has been completed and the required receipts (original receipts) have been submitted and processed, students will be reimbursed. Funds will not be paid in advance of travel.
