The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Construction hosts undergraduate and graduate programs in civil engineering and construction management. The Civil Engineering Program includes in-depth study in environmental engineering, as well as construction, geotechnical, structural, transportation, and water resources. , accredits our civil engineering curriculum, modeled on the recommendations of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The Construction Management Program serves the educational, research, and service needs of the construction industry by focusing on a blend of topics related to both the engineering and the management sides of construction. Both curricula are designed to provide graduates with the necessary skills to become successful, innovative and socially responsible professionals.
Civil engineering involves the planning, analysis and design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the world’s structures and infrastructure. Civil and environmental engineers design and construct buildings, bridges, highways, dams, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and other public and private works essential to civilized life in a modern society. Civil engineers also apply modern and sophisticated tools to plan and design large-scale systems for the public good, including components and material selection. Civil engineers work primarily in teams, in a broad range of business models and as public servants.
Construction management involves the planning, performance, and management of the construction process. Construction engineering and management covers the construction of all types of engineered facilities, including residential and commercial buildings, bridges, highways, power plants, water and wastewater treatment facilities, and other public works essential to the quality of life of an industrial society.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction provides a well-rounded education, combining theoretical principles with practical laboratory experience. Our program prepares you to excel in industry or compete against other students at the best graduate schools in the country. Las Vegas is a perfect example of engineering in action. The city has emerged as a major urban center with modern transportation infrastructure, innovative water and wastewater systems, and many major structures such as resort hotels, bridges, and high-rise buildings.

- Network with other students and professionals in your field through involvement in student chapters of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Association of General Contractors (AGC), and Engineers Without Borders (EWB).
Missions and Goals
It is the mission of the department to produce competent, ethical, and socially responsible graduates. Develop and advance knowledge, and serve the community and the profession in civil and environmental engineering. The goals of the department’s accredited baccalaureate programs are to:
- Prepare graduates for the lifelong professional practice in the diverse fields of Civil Engineering and Construction Management.
- Prepare graduates for professional licensure.
- Provide graduates with solid academic preparation for graduate study.
