Because of the efforts of our campus community and notably the extraordinary efforts of these individuals, throughout the pandemic UNLV has continued to provide a quality and affordable education to students, carried out impactful research and scholarship, and served our local and broader communities.
Adam Garcia, Vice President of Public Safety Services and Director of University Police Services Southern Command has developed successful collaborations between UNLV, CSN, NSHE, and Southern Nevada agencies to boost both COVID-19 testing capabilities and points of distribution for vaccines. His role liaising with elected leaders and local agencies has been vital to advancing the safety and wellbeing within Southern Nevada’s educational and broader communities. (Bio)
Dr. Michael Gardner, Vice Dean of the School of Medicine and CEO of UNLV Medicine, launched one of the first public COVID-19 testing sites in Southern Nevada with a volunteer crew of faculty and future physicians. He readily embraced the opportunity to coordinate two sites to provide vaccinations across NSHE and CCSD, bringing in more student and employee volunteers from UNLV, NSC and CSN.
Julie Young has been an integral part of UNLV Medicine's testing effort in 2019 and both vaccination centers at UNLV and CSN. She runs all operations and works closely with Dr. Gardner. Julie is a vital member of our vaccine incident management team (which is Adam Garcia, Gregg Maye, Dr. Gardner, Julie and me) - and she may be the only person in our group not being recognized. She closely coordinates with Clark County, the Southern Nevada Health District, CSN, NSC, Arizona College, and many others to keep supplies coming in, staff both sites, release appointments and keep things running smoothly. Gregg Maye is the Assistant Director of Emergency Management at UNLV and has served as the COVID-19 Ombudsman and a jack of all trades, overseeing logistics, directing resources, implementing the latest guidance and helping UNLV and its sister institutions resume operations in a safe manner. He continues to serve as a bridge connecting agencies and institutions in Southern Nevada as the COVID-19 testing has continued on campus and the vaccination effort expands.
Dr. Brian Labus, Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in UNLV’s School of Public Health serves on the Governor’s advisory committee. By February, he had completed more than 500 media interviews and has been a trusted source in Southern Nevada and across the nation as a leading expert throughout the pandemic. Labus was awarded $5.1 million in CARES Act funding to establish a team of 200 contact tracers that work with the Southern Nevada Health District to help stop the spread of COVID-19. (Bio)
Cindy Brown, Sr. Director for Public Affairs, has worked closely with Adam, Gregg, and Brian, addressing a plethora of issues and communication needs. She took on the on-campus COVID-19 case reporting and tracking process in April 2020 and continues with response as well as supporting operations and communications for NSHE and UNLV Medicine’s vaccination effort.
