Chemicals and other hazardous materials are regulated by a number of different agencies, at federal, state and local levels. Congress mandated the (EPA) to re-authorize environmental regulations previously defined in . In 1984, the EPA released the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). The is the agency authorized to enforce these regulations and the regulations they write.
Risk Management & Safety takes the management of hazardous wastes on campus very seriously. Those in charge of managing Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs) for waste must be trained under the RCRA Generator procedures. That training is available from the online training section. Those in charge of managing SAAs must also complete monthly inspections under those same rules, and submit them to Risk Management & Safety, so that the UNLV community can be assured that wastes kept in accumulation areas are being stored safely.
Disposing of Wastes
If you have hazardous waste that needs to be removed from an on-campus location or other UNLV property, an is available to request a pickup. When preparing to make a waste pickup request, remember to allow three working days for the disposal to be completed. Ensure that all labeling and marking is properly completed and easily visible, and that the waste is in an accessible location.
