Emergency Safety

University police officers regularly receive active shooter training and they are prepared to immediately move to eliminate any threats, should they occur. Here’s what you can do to protect yourself if you find yourself in this situation:

Run, If Safe

  • While exiting, notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building immediately.
  • Evacuate to a safe area away from the danger and take protective cover.
  • Stay away from all windows and doors until notified otherwise.
  • Stay there until assistance arrives.
  • Call 9-1-1.
Active Shooter Training

University Police train on an annual basis to handle active shooter situations.

Hide, If You Cannot Escape

  • Go to the nearest room or office.
  • Close and lock the door.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Seek protective cover.
  • Keep quiet (as if the room is empty).
  • Don’t answer the door.
  • If possible, call 9-1-1 from your location.

Fight, As a Last Resort

If confronted, respond with full force using whatever is available (objects as improvised weapons, etc.)

University Police Services’ officers have been trained to provide assistance as first responders for medical emergencies, and every year they undergo certification training to respond to active shooter situations. While our department takes steps each day to ensure the safety of the things we can control, natural disasters and dangerous situations can still occur when inclement weather, utility failures, and other unpredictable incidents present a threat to the safety of the campus community.

University Police Services believes first and foremost in equipping students and employees with the knowledge and power to feel safe on campus. To better prepare for the unpredictable, we recommend the tips below to keep you safe.

Inclement Weather

Flooding on Campus

  • Stay away from flooded areas. If walking to and from class, attempt to take an alternate route.
  • Do not attempt to drive in flooded areas, and do not walk through flooded areas. The water may be contaminated, and it may sweep you away.
  • Use caution if an electrical source is nearby.

When an Earthquake Occurs

  • If you're inside, remain inside and move underneath a sturdy (preferably bolted down) fixture. Avoid areas with glass nearby.
  • If you're outside, move away from buildings and utility wires.

Utility Failure

Natural Gas Leaks

  • Leave the area and stay upwind from the leak.
  • Refrain from switching on lights or any other electrical equipment in the area.
  • Do not smoke in the area.
  • If indoors, open any windows in your office for ventilation before leaving the premises.

Power Outages

  • If you are in a dimly-lit area, proceed cautiously to an area that has lighting. Provide assistance to others in your area that may be unfamiliar with the area.
  • If you are trapped in an elevator, call University Police at 702-895-3669, and our police dispatchers will coordinate with Facilities Management to get you safely on the ground as soon as possible.

Active Assailant

University Police Services encourages the campus community to follow the “Run, Hide, Fight” plan if an active assailant is on campus. For a video and full list of tips to increase your chances of staying safe in the vicinity of an active assailant, visit our active shooter safety tips above.
