Biography
Professor Jack Young joined the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences during fall 1991. He teaches exercise physiology, nutrition and metabolism, human energy metabolism, and human physiology courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs.
Young’s research focuses on energy metabolism and exercise performance. Recent studies have included performance measures among female collegiate soccer players, bone mineral density among cheerleaders and pep dancers, and field tests of physiological functions among active young adults. Other studies have used an animal model to investigate the effects of alternate day fasting and artificial sweeteners on glucose metabolism, growth, and body composition.
Young earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Michigan, and his doctoral degree in exercise physiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed an NIH postdoctoral fellowship in exercise metabolism in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine.
