A variety of events, including lectures, panel discussions, poetry readings, and an art exhibit, will take place in March in honor of Women's History Month. Most of the events will take place at UNLV.
The kick-off event, the opening of the art exhibit "Different Looks: Women Artists of UNLV," will take place Thursday (March 1) from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Richard Tam Alumni Center.
Ellen Rose, chair of UNLV's Women Studies Program, will discuss the background and purpose of Women's History Month, while UNLV art professor Cathie Kelly will introduce the exhibit and talk about women's art at UNLV. Light refreshments will be served.
The exhibit will remain at the center through March 30. Following is a list of other events scheduled as part of Women's History Month. Unless otherwise noted, they take place on the UNLV campus.
-- March 2. "Financial Empowerment for Women" workshop. Noon-1 p.m. at Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 222.

-- March 6 and 7. Grant Writing Workshop. This two-day workshop will meet 4-7 p.m. March 6 in the Rod Lee Bigelow Health Sciences Building, Room 130 and 4-6:30 p.m. March 7 in Bigelow Health Sciences, Room 134.

-- March 21. Lecture on Gender and (Crime) Victims' Rights: Failure to Consider Women's Situations. 7:30 p.m. Classroom Building Complex, Room A-108.
-- March 23. Presentation by Nevada Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa of the seventh annual Attorney General's Nevada's Women's Role Model Awards. Noon-1 p.m. Moyer Student Union, Room 201.
-- March 29. "Looking Back at Nevada," a reception and show previewing the video biographies of nine women who contributed to the development of Las Vegas. 5:30 p.m. at the Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
-- March 30. Class on Street Smarts and Personal Safety. Noon-1 p.m. Flora Dungan Humanities Building, Room 109.
-- March 31. Class on Physical Techniques for Self-Defense. Noon-3 p.m. McDermott Physical Education Center, Room 506.
