UNLV will once again benefit from the proceeds of the US Home "Dollars for Scholars" home give-away sweepstakes. The goal of this year's raffle is to raise $100,000 to provide scholarships and other financial support for UNLV students.
US Home donated a three-bedroom, two-bath house in the Heritage Park Community on Sunrise Mountain for the fundraising event. When completed, the home will be valued at more than $125,000. Sweepstakes tickets will be available after the official kick-off on March 18. Ten finalists will draw for the winning house key during a live KVBC Channel 3 broadcast on May 24.
"Dollars for Scholars" was conceived by US Home's Las Vegas division president, Steve Hackney who said, "We are committed to improving the community and what better way than to help UNLV and its environmental studies students."
No one agrees more than Lisa Osorio, a single mother of two young daughters who is working her way through UNLV's environmental studies program. Severe financial problems almost forced her to leave school last year. "'Dollars for Scholars' provided a paid internship that helped us through a very rough period," said Osorio, who coordinates UNLV environmental education programs.
According to Hackney, the project would not be possible without donations from the US Home Partners in Progress which contributed toward construction of the house. Partners in Progress includes: The Cabinetry, Cedco Stucco, Dawn Framing, Homestead Landscaping, Sierra Air Conditioning, Sunbelt Corporation, Pacific Stucco, Earl Williams & Sons, Avanti Doors, Lin Construction, Ace Electric, Campbell Concrete, Cooper Roofing, Home Theater, Great West Surveying, Hynd's Plumbing, Weddell & Son's, and Big Red Construction.
Tickets for the charitable lottery, which was approved by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, will be sold for $10 each. Mail-in applications will be available at any US Home location, Channel 3, Regent Broadcasting radio stations, the UNLV Foundation and all Terrible Herbst locations. Student volunteers from UNLV will also man sales booths at the Boulevard and Meadows Malls every weekend from March 18 until May 14, excluding Easter Sunday and April 22. On April 22, tickets will be available at Earth Fair `95 held at Sunset Park.
Employees and family members of Regent Broadcasting, Sunbelt Broadcasting, US Home, UNLV, their affiliates, advertising agencies, the official auditors, and printers of raffle materials are not eligible to participate in the lottery. The fundraising event will be monitored and audited by Piercy, Bowler, Taylor and Kern Certified Public Accountants.
Information concerning US Home "Dollars for Scholars" will be available by tuning to KVBC Channel 3 or Regent Broadcasting radio stations Sunny 106.5, KFM 102, and Y-93.
