LAS VEGAS - April 8, 2013 - Students in UNLV's Dayton North Complex residence hall were evacuated early this morning when a trashcan fire in a second floor restroom tripped the facility's smoke alarm and sprinkler system, causing water damage on the building's first and second floors.
Approximately 160 students were evacuated just before midnight. There were no injuries, and the fire department has preliminarily ruled the fire was accidental.
Affected students were relocated by 2:30 a.m. to another residence hall on campus, where they will stay while the water damage is assessed and cleaned up.
The approximate cost of the water damage is still being determined, and UNLV residential life officials estimate that most students will be able to move back into their Dayton North Complex rooms by the end of the week.
