UNLV's Institute for Security Studies (ISS), in coordination with the City of Las Vegas Department of Fire and Rescue, is offering free to the public the Federal Emergency Management Agency Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program throughout the month of February and early March.
The six-session CERT training program is part of the Homeland Security Lecture Series, with the goal of training citizens and members of neighborhood, community, or workplace organizations in basic response skills. This will allow local citizens to be better prepared to address the homeland security issues that impact their communities.
The program is designed to cover such topics as:
- Terrorism and disaster preparedness
- Fire safety
- Disaster medical operations
- Light search and rescue
- Disaster psychology
Participants who successfully complete the CERT training program will receive a complimentary emergency response kit that contains basic items outlined in the sessions.
The following Thursday sessions will run from 6 to 9:30 p.m., at UNLV ISS, located at 4045 S. Spencer Street, Suite A-41: Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24; and March 3.
One additional Saturday session will be held on Feb. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the City of Las Vegas Fire Training Center, located at 633 N. Mojave.
