UNLV's Rebel Recycling Program will hold its Spring Extravaganza Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 17-18. The sale will feature items donated by students who have recently moved out of the campus residence halls.
"We have so many clothes, shoes, linens, books, dishes, office supplies, and toys that it's overwhelming," said Tara Pike, UNLV solid waste and recycling manager. "This year we collected over 9,000 pounds of reusable items from the dorms to sell in the yard sale."
All proceeds from the sale will support the Rebel Recycling Program's efforts to divert large amounts of UNLV's waste stream to recycling and reuse and to help fund student workers from UNLV's work study program.
Margi Baxter, assistant rebel recycling coordinator, said all items for sale are reasonably priced. "The best thing about our yard sale is the low prices and the fact that the items were saved from the landfill. Jeans are a dollar, and a book or a T-shirt is a quarter. Most of the items are below a dollar. You never know what you will find here."
UNLV hotel administration students are managing the sale as part of their coursework for a facilities management course. The students are learning advertising, marketing, merchandising, and customer-service skills through the management of the project.
The Rebel Recycling Program is located on the southeast corner of Flamingo Road and Swenson Street behind the three solar dishes. The sale is held in the yard and in one of the two gray double-wide trailers with red trim.
