UNLV President Neal Smatresk will outline his vision for the university during his annual State of the University address. The address will include a review of 2012-2013 achievements, a discussion of priorities for the current year, and an introduction of UNLV's long-term plan to become a Tier One research university.

The State of the University address officially kicks-off the new academic year and gives President Smatresk a chance to celebrate accomplishments from the past year and forecast the year ahead.
During the address, President Smatresk will discuss how infrastructure and service improvements over the past year have helped generate the largest, most diverse and best qualified entering class in UNLV history - including six National Merit scholars. UNLV residence halls are at capacity, and over the past two years, over 150 new full-time faculty have been hired to meet the educational needs of the students and the research needs of the region.
President Smatresk will also introduce a long-term initiative to become a Tier One research university, which includes continued development in research, undergraduate and graduate education, and a strategic increase in faculty size and infrastructure. He will also highlight the university's community and economic impact and the importance of investing in higher education.
