The UNLV Performing Arts Center ushers in the holidays with The Manhattan Transfer at 8 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 as part of the New York Stage & Beyond Series. With incomparable, award-winning four-part harmony, their part jazz, part holiday program is the perfect start to the season.
The Manhattan Transfer made music history as the first group to win a Grammy in both the pop and jazz categories the same year for Boys from New York City in 1981. In 1982, they accepted another Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance for their rendition of the classic "Route 66." They repeated their 1982 Grammy win in the same category for "Why Not!," a track from Bodies and Souls. Their follow-up album, Vocalese, scored no less than a dozen Grammy nominations - at the time, second only to Michael Jackson's Thriller as the most nominated single album ever. Vocalese won in two categories: Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Duo or Group, and Best Arrangement for Voices. Then came Brazil, their 1987 groundbreaking re-contextualization of Brazilian music. The album won a Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
Tickets to The Manhattan Transfer are $40, $55, and $85 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 895-ARTS (2787) or by visiting pac.unlv.edu. Student rush tickets are $13 each and available one hour prior to each event, based on availability and with valid student I.D. UNLV faculty and staff discounts also are available. A $1 facilities fee, in addition to the ticket price, is charged on all Performing Arts Center tickets. The box office is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Information about all of the season's performances can be found on the Performing Arts Center website, located at pac.unlv.edu.
Founded in 1976, the Performing Arts Center at UNLV continues to be Southern Nevada's premier performing arts venue. Located on the north end of the UNLV campus, the PAC hosts a variety of performances each year in three distinct series - the Charles Vanda Master Series, New York Stage & Beyond Series, and the Classical Guitar Series. UNLV and KLVX Channel 10 are graciously sponsoring the season.
