UNLV students, faculty, staff, and visitors accustomed to parking in the university lots along Maryland Parkway south of Harmon Avenue will find more than 100 additional parking spaces available to them later this month. However, because of construction delays, those spaces will not be available in time for the first day of spring semester classes on Tuesday (Jan. 18).
A total of 88 new student spaces, 10 additional faculty/staff spaces, and 10 more metered parking spaces for visitors will be available in those lots by Jan. 24, said Tom Hudak, the university's interim parking manager.
Plans originally called for the construction of the new spaces to be completed by the beginning of spring semester, but construction delays occurred, Hudak said.
That means that on Tuesday none of the new spaces will be available, he said. Additionally, some of the faculty/staff and metered spots that usually are available in the lot immediately east of the Dungan Humanities Building and in what used to be a parking loop immediately east of the Moyer Student Union will not be available during the first week of classes, he said.
All the student parking in the lot at the corner of Maryland and University Road will be available on the first day of class as usual, he said.
Hudak suggested that faculty and staffmembers who do not arrive early enough to get parking in front of the Humanities Building proceed to the lot south of Tonopah Hall or to the lots at the Thomas & Mack Center. Visitor parking is available in the visitor lot at the corner of Maryland and Harmon.
The new spaces are being added in what was the MSU parking loop and in the Dungan Humanities Building lot.
"We are sorry for the temporary inconvenience that this project will cause some members of the campus community, but we feel certain the long-term gains will be worth the temporary inconvenience," he said.
When the project is completed, what was the parking loop will have been replaced with a parking lot. The three lots will be connected by driveways. Drivers will be able to enter the lots from Harmon and from University.
