UNLV Opera Theater and Nevada Conservatory Theatre present The Turn of the Screw at 7:30 p.m. on March 9 and 10, and 2 p.m. on March 11 in the Judy Bayley Theatre.
Based on the novella by Henry James, this operatic version of The Turn of the Screw is the creation of composer Benjamin Britten and librettist Myfanwy Piper. It tells the story of an inexperienced governess who believes something evil is stalking two young children left in her care following the death of their parents.
Guest lecturer Kevin Salfen hosts a pre-performance talk at 6:30 p.m. on March 9 in the Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery, HFA 145. Salfen is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and producer. Major research interests include twentieth-century British music and Japanese music in film and theater.
The Turn of the Screw stars Emily Dirks and Olivia Yokers as the Governess, with Michael TK Lam and Collin Salmon as the former valet, Peter Quint. Abbie McConnell and Kristina Tullgren play the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, while Tyler Urbano and Alonna Younger are the former governess, Miss Jessel. Joshua Hager and Christian Shelton play the part of the Prologue. Lily Martin and Madelyn Salazar sing the role of the young girl Flora. Bella Castellarin and Lily Robin, both students at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts, alternate as Miles, the young boy haunted by Bly Manor.
The opera is performed with Britten’s original arrangement of a 13-piece chamber orchestra.
This ghost story is directed by Linda Lister and conducted by Darryl Cooper. The talented student designers of the UNLV theatre department round out the production team: Diante Hernandez (scenic designer), Jasmin Garcia (lighting designer), and Leah Procita (costume designer).
