Couples or individuals who have lost a child during pregnancy or shortly after birth will soon have a new source of support available to them at UNLV.
A Perinatal Loss Support Group is being formed and will begin meeting on Sept. 21. Meetings will be held each Tuesday from 6:30-8 p.m. through Nov. 30 at UNLV's Client Services Center, located in the McDermott Physical Education Complex, Room 207.
This service is available free of charge. The group will be limited to a maximum of approximately 16 people.
The goal of the group is to provide grief support that will aid participants in processing and coping with their losses. All types of pregnancy losses, including blighted ovum, ectopic, miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal, and postnatal, will be included in discussions.
David Mumford and Naomi Karrick, both master's students in the marriage and family therapy program, will act as facilitators for the group under the supervision of counseling professor Shirley Emerson.
