UNLV has named Ardyth BroadrickSohn the new director of the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies, effective July 1.
Sohn began her academic career at the University of Colorado ( Boulder) in 1976 where she was promoted to tenured associate professor and served as director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication doctoral program before moving in 1993 to Indiana. She was a professor of communication at Ball State University for one year, and from 1994-1999 she was a tenured professor of journalism at Butler University in Indianapolis. She also has taught at University of Denver, was a visiting scholar in media management at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, and a visiting professor at the University of Texas. She was the Warner Endowed Chair and professor of journalism at Sam Houston State University School of Public Communication.
During the spring of 2004, Sohn was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to Kyiv International University in Ukraine, where she taught courses, assisted with grant proposals, and completed research concerning television operations involving interviews with working journalists and observers of Ukrainian media. She is the co-author of a widely used media management case book currently being revised for its fourth edition, is completing a book concerning media and public portrayals of capital punishment, and is the author or co-author of several book chapters and articles about media management and agenda setting. She recently was named a fellow in the first-ever Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Institute funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Her professional experience includes writing and reporting for newspapers as well as public relations work.
The Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies is preparing for accreditation consideration within the next five years. Plans for the new Greenspun College of Urban Affairs Building, where the School will be housed, include both television and radio stations as well as a convergence laboratory for innovative curricula now being developed. Sohn holds Ph.D. and master's degrees in Journalism from Southern Illinois University as well as a bachelor's degree in English Education from the University of Illinois.
