The UNLV Jazz Ensemble I will perform on April 20 at 7:30 p.m., featuring special guest drum artist Joe La Barbera and accompaniment by the Timpanagos High School Big Band from Orem, Utah. The performance will be held in Artemus Ham Hall, located on the north end of the UNLV campus. General admission tickets are $5; tickets are free for military, seniors and students.
From playing with the U.S. Army band at Fort Dix, New Jersey to his work with musical legend Tony Bennett, Joe La Barbera has enjoyed a long and varied career. In 1978 he joined Jazz great Bill Evans and bassist Marc Johnson in what would become a landmark trio. Since then, the artist has toured with "Bassline" and numerous other groups, including a quintet of his own.
La Babera is currently on the faculty at California Institute for the Arts and the Bud Shank Jazz Workshop in Port Townsend, Washington. He also spends time touring as a guest artist at major universities throughout the country.
