LAS VEGAS - September 3, 2009 - Recognizing that energy security is a critical component of America's national security policy, the UNLV Institute for Security Studies (ISS) has produced an informational DVD, "Fueling America's Options: The Future of Energy Security."
The 13-minute presentation is designed to raise awareness among policymakers and the public about the important role energy security plays in the maintenance of overall national security and includes a detailed look at the complex energy security issues in America post-Sept. 11.
"Eight years after the tragic events of Sept. 11, national security continues to be undermined by America's growing dependence on foreign energy sources located in unstable regions of the world," said Nancy Brune, ISS director of research and policy. "While there is widespread agreement that America must strive for energy independence, competing ideas about which energy strategies the U.S. should pursue to maintain the quality of life for our citizens pose significant challenges."
The DVD, with appearances from U.S. Congresswomen Shelley Berkley and Dina Titus of Nevada, is being released as part of the ISS' ongoing Energy Security Policy Initiative. Through the initiative, the ISS and its partners conduct research and outreach to assist U.S. policymakers in the development of long-term energy security policies within the context of global trends and challenges. Through publications, workshops and forums, the initiative also leverages UNLV's location in the Intermountain West to understand the advantages and limitations of renewable energy as a key part of America's comprehensive energy security plan.
