UNLV's School of Social Work will host the 6th Annual Child Welfare Conference and Awards Luncheon from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 2 at the Cox Pavilion, located next to the Thomas and Mack Center on the UNLV campus. Social work professionals who attend the conference will receive six CEU credits.
This year's event, titled "Mission Possible 2003: An Odyssey with Children and Families," is being cosponsored by the Division of Child and Family Services, Clark County Social Services, Department of Juvenile Justice Services, Department of Family Services, and the Family Preservation Institute.
James Harris Jr., former astronaut and current president of the Harris Foundation, will present the morning keynote address from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., and the Honorable Anthony Heckemeyer, a retired Family Court judge, will present the afternoon keynote from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Throughout the day, attendees will have 12 workshops to choose from, including topics such as "Juvenile Sex Offenders: Supervision, Monitoring, and Treatment"; "Grandparents Raising Grandchildren"; "Working with Gay and Lesbian Youth"; and "Social Work Ethics in Child Welfare," among others.
The Awards Luncheon will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. and will honor individuals for their contributions to the profession of social work. Awards to be presented include the Pacesetter Award, the Child Welfare Professional of the Year Award, and the Social Work Students of the Year Award. The Honorable Cynthia Diane Steel of the Eight Judicial District Court will present the luncheon's keynote address.
Registration fees, which include breakfast, lunch, refreshments, and a CEU certificate, are $50 if received by April 25 and $55 at the door. Attendees may also register for the conference only ($40), a half-day conference ($35), or the luncheon only ($40). The event is free for social work students; a valid student I.D. is required.
