The UNLV School of Social Work will host its second annual Child Welfare Conference from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 26 on the university campus.
Dave Pelzer, youth service worker and counselor, will deliver the key note address, "The Real Heroes," at 9 a.m. Pelzer is the author of The Lost Boys and A Boy Called 'It.' His presentation will recount his experiences as an abused child and his subsequent rescue and progress in a foster home.
At 1:15 p.m., Myla Florence, a Nevada State Welfare administrator; Kirby Burgess, director of the division of family and youth services; Steven Shaw, a child and family services division administrator; and Vicky Albert, a UNLV social work professor; will lead a panel discussion on the "Impact of Temporary Assistance to Needy Families in Child Welfare."
A second panel discussion on "Issues in Child Welfare" will follow at 2:30 p.m. The second panel will be headed by UNLV social work professors An-Pyng Sun and Ramona Denby.
The conference is part of the Family Series hosted by the Greenspun College of Urban Affairs. All the conference events will take place in the ballroom of the Moyer Student Union.
Registration is $50 for human services professionals and $25 for the general public.
