LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Alumni Association will honor a number of UNLV graduates and university supporters during a special Homecoming Celebration on Sept. 26.
State Sen. Ray Rawson, R-Clark, has been selected to receive the UNLV Alumni Association Alumnus of the Year Award. Rawson has served in the Legislature since 1985 and has held a variety of leadership positions. He is being recognized for his support in the Legislature of higher education.
William S. Boyd, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Boyd Gaming Corp., will receive the Silver State Award -- the highest award that the association can bestow on someone who is not an alumnus. Boyd, after whom UNLV's new law school is named, is being honored in recognition of the support he and his family have provided UNLV in many areas, including the law school.
UNLV alumnus Bruce Chapman will receive the Distinguished Service Award. He is being recognized for his many charitable endeavors, including his work with the Candlelighters children's charity and his commitment to the Valerie Pida Memorial Scholarship Fund.
The awards will be presented at the Homecoming Celebration, which will take place Sept. 26 in the courtyard west of the Richard Tam Alumni Center on the UNLV campus. The event, which includes dinner, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 if purchased in advance and $20 at the door. The Homecoming Celebration comes the day before UNLV's homecoming football game against Illinois State University.
In addition to the awards listed above, nine of UNLV's colleges will be presenting an Outstanding Alumnus Award to someone who graduated from their college.
Those awards will be given to:
