The UNLV department of dance announces its 2019-20 concert season, A Season of Art. Building on its recent recognition by Backstage Magazine for its high-caliber choreography program, the department of dance features four unique concerts showcasing works created by UNLV dance faculty and students emphasizing collaborations with multiple departments within the College of Fine Arts, as well as a biennial collaboration with the UNLV Orchestra.
In Orchestra 4: Daphnis and Chloe
Oct. 18 &19
The season begins with In Orchestra 4: Daphnis and Chloe, the fourth collaboration between UNLV Dance and the UNLV Orchestra. Dance professors Dolly Kelepecz-Momot and Louis Kavouras reimagine Maurice Ravel's 1912 ballet Daphnis and Chloe — a work originally created for Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russes and choreographed by Michael Folkine. This reimagining creates a contemporary mix of ballet and modern dance choreography, bringing to life this timeless tale of love and innocence. The concert also features Ravel's powerful work Bolero, with new choreography by dance professor Cathy Allen. Lighting is by dance design specialist Michael Jarett.
Brushstrokes of Motion
Nov. 14-17
November promises an exciting collection of dances from bachelor of fine arts majors — Brushstrokes of Motion — presented in the Alta Ham Fine Arts dance studio one (HFA, Room 111). This concert features lighting design from the production and management majors. Professor Victoria Dale also presents a work that will represent UNLV at the International Association of Blacks in Dance International Conference in Philadelphia in January.
Creative Constructs
Feb. 28 & 29
UNLV dance has a deep respect for dance and design, and is the only dance department in the nation with a dedicated degree program in dance lighting, design, and stage management. Creative Constructs is a concert where choreographers, visual artists, composers, and design artists collaborate to produce never-before-seen dance environments and visual worlds.
Featuring choreography and design by UNLV’s award-winning faculty — Cathy Allen, Victoria Dale, Richard Havey, Michael Jarett, James Jeon, Beth Mehocic, Dolly Kelepecz-Momot, and Louis Kavouras - Creative Constructs is presented in the Judy Bayley Theatre. The concert also features choreography by modern dance pioneer Erick Hawkins.
Artistic Signatures
April 23-26
The season concludes with Artistic Signatures, a collection of works choreographed by dance majors in dance performance and choreography. This concert features lighting design from the production and management majors, and will be presented in the Alta Ham Fine Arts dance studio one (HFA, Room 111).
