Brazilian-born brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad, today's preeminent guitar duo, perform as part of the UNLV Performing Arts Center Classical Guitar Series at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 29 in Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall. Their repertoire includes original music by S?rgio Assad; transcriptions of Bach and Scarlatti; and adaptations of works by such diverse figures as Gershwin and Milhaud.
The Assads began playing the guitar together at an early age and went on to study for seven years with guitar/lutenist Monina T?vora, a disciple of Andr?s Segovia. Their international career began with a major prize at the 1979 young artists competition in Bratislava. Odair is based in Brussels where he teaches at Ecole Sup?rieure des Arts, and Sergio resides in Chicago where he teaches at Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts, yet the majority of their time is spent on tour throughout the Americas, Europe and the Far East.
Tickets to S?rgio and Odair Assad are $35 and can be purchased at the Performing Arts Center Box Office at 895-ARTS (2787) or by visiting pac.unlv.edu. Student rush tickets are $13.50 each and available one hour prior to each event, based on availability and with valid student I.D. UNLV faculty and staff discounts also are available. Founded in 1976, the Performing Arts Center at UNLV continues to be Southern Nevada's premier performing arts venue. Located on the north end of the UNLV campus, the PAC hosts a variety of performances each year in three distinct series - the Charles Vanda Master Series, New York Stage & Beyond Series, and the Classical Guitar Series. UNLV and KLVX Channel 10 are graciously sponsoring the season.
