DETAILS: Thirteen past and current participants in the federally funded Trio and GEAR UP program through the UNLV Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach will be honored at an awards ceremony Saturday, Feb. 21. The guest speaker is Jerome Williams, a former NBA player for the New York Knicks.
Trio and GEAR UP are college preparatory programs serving at-risk schools nationwide. The programs provide mentoring, tutoring and educational workshops to students in middle school, high school and college. Students, parents and families in the programs also receive guidance on how to achieve a post-secondary education. Participants visit local colleges and meet with college recruiters.
In Clark County, GEAR UP serves 20 middle schools and 12 high schools. Currently, there are 30,000 participants in the Trio program.
