Citizens with criminal records in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and Henderson are invited to attend a community event that will allow them to get a court order sealing of their record. Interested individuals must by Aug. 11 in order to participate.

Nearly one in three Americans of working age have had some sort of encounter with the criminal justice system – mostly for relatively minor, non-violent offenses, and sometimes from decades in the past. The long-term impact of a criminal record prevents many people from obtaining employment, housing, higher education, and credit.

In Nevada, an individual can seal criminal records of some crimes after a certain amount of time has passed if the individual has stayed out of trouble. The process, however, to do so is often tedious and difficult to undertake.

On Aug. 27, all relevant community organizations will come together under one roof to allow individuals seeking to seal their criminal record to: interview with an attorney, have their court paperwork prepared, have their case reviewed by a district or city attorney, and have a judge issue a decision, all that day.

Organizations involved in this effort include: the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law; Clark County Commissioner Lawrence Weekly; Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada; Nevada Legal Services; Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department; North Las Vegas Police Department; Nevada Department of Public Safety, Courts, Parole & Probation; clerks’ offices; and pro bono lawyers.
