Close to 800 elementary students are expected to attend the homecoming pep rally where UNLV students will share their stories about college life and teach kids the UNLV fight song. UNLV student organizations are currently collecting school supplies for five elementary schools in UNLV's Adopt-a-School program.
Principals from each school selected high-achieving students in each grade to receive tickets to UNLV's Nov. 2 homecoming football game and tailgate against San Jose State. Selected students will also be recognized during half-time at the game.
UNLV's Adopt-A-School program began in 2009 as a way to introduce higher education to children at an early age. Throughout the program, elementary school students are encouraged to excel academically and are rewarded with pizza parties and prizes.
UNLV has adopted five local at-risk schools: Cynthia Cunningham Elementary, Oran K. Gragson Elementary, Dean Petersen Professional Development School, Paradise Professional Development School, Ruth Fyfe Empowerment School.
The Adopt-A-School rally at Cunningham Elementary is open to UNLV students and employees.
