UNLV professor Charles Regin and Heather Howard, director of one of the university's advising centers, are slated to receive Academic Advisor Awards from the Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada.
University President Carol C. Harter nominated Regin and Howard for the honor. Howard, who directs the College of Education Advising Center, was selected for her work with undergraduates. Regin, who is an assistant professor and the department chair for the department of health and physical education, was chosen for his work with graduate students. Each will receive $2,500.
At the College of Education, Howard is responsible for overseeing the advising of between 2,800 and 3,000 students. Since becoming director in 1999, she has initiated a number of improvements, including creating a student database, streamlining advising sheets, and updating application processes.
A UNLV alumna, Howard previously worked as a professional adviser for the university's Student Development Center.
Regin, who has taught at UNLV since 1987, was instrumental in the development of the master's degree program in health promotion and now advises 24 of the program's graduate students.
The awards will be on the March agenda of the Board of Regents.
