As the heat of the summer months drives up all of our power bills, energy is a hot topic. These UNLV experts can discuss a variety of energy-related issues.
Robert Boehm (mechanical engineering) can discuss his research on a "zero-energy house" that will be built soon by Pinnacle Homes. It's the same design as the other houses in the tract around it, but it is primarily solar powered. At any given time, it will either use or send power to Nevada Power, so it's possible that its resident will generate credit with the power company. The house design plans and some of the equipment are available as visuals now.
Helen Neill (environmental studies) can tell us why it's still so expensive to use solar power.
Thomas Jones (hotel management) can guide hotels and restaurants on what they can do to use less energy and cut their power bills. He has been a consultant to several local hotel properties on this issue.
Robert Futrell (sociology) analyzes the cultural issues associated with energy use, such as attitudes toward conservation. He can also comment on how people view emerging technology versus traditional energy sources and uses.
Thomas Hagge (UNLV Facilities Management) can address what UNLV is doing to conserve energy.
