Victims and survivors of violence will be remembered Tuesday during Take Back the Night activities scheduled at UNLV.
Take Back the Night is an annual event celebrated across the nation. It encourages people to remember victims and survivors of violence, as well promoting heightened awareness of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Events at UNLV will begin at 3 p.m. on Valerie Pida Plaza and the nearby Alumni Amphitheatre with an Exhibitors' Faire at which campus and community organizations will offer their services and resources. Pida Plaza and the amphitheatre are located just north of the Moyer Student Union. Among the groups that will be represented at the faire are hospitals, shelters serving victims of domestic violence, and other social service agencies.
At 5 p.m., people attending the event will have the chance to participate in the Silhouette Project, which involves people having their body outlines traced onto cloth. Participants then are encouraged to write within their outlines expressing their emotions about violence or their support for victims of violence.
Guest speakers are scheduled for 6 p.m. Their presentations will be followed by a march, candlelight vigil, and rally.
The event is sponsored by UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center, the Women's Studies Program, Student Health Center, Campus Community Development, Student Psychological Services, International Student Services, Sports Marketing, CSUN Student Government, Department of Public Safety, Student Development Center, and the Nevada Public Health Foundation.
