UNLV's Honors College is offering advanced academic seminars this summer to local high school students interested in getting a jump start on their college careers.
The Summer Advanced Gifted Education (SAGE) seminars will be held July 19-Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the campus of UNLV. The intensive, three-week seminars are designed for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have been identified as gifted by the Clark County School District, have been named National Merit Scholars or finalists, or who are currently enrolled in honors or advanced placement courses at their high schools.
Each SAGE seminar is the equivalent of one semester-long college course and will be taught by a UNLV professor. Seminar topics include the following:
- The Modern Woman: U.S. Women in the 20th Century
- Effective Public Speaking
- Sister Republics: France and America From World War II to Today
- The Global Dance: Modern International Relations
During the seminars, students will read the most recent literature in the subject areas, engage in group discussions and debates, learn valuable study habits, and conduct individual research. Students who successfully complete the seminars will earn three college credits.
The cost of tuition is $500 per seminar and includes daily lunches in the UNLV Dining Commons. The cost of textbooks, which is estimated to be around $60, is not included.
For more information, contact Carrol Steedman, director of credit programs at UNLV's Office of Educational Outreach, at 895-1021.
The Sage Academy is being cosponsored by the UNLV Honors College, the Office of Educational Outreach, and the Las Vegas World Affairs Council.
