The UNLV campus community was profoundly saddened to learn today of the passing of Dr. Donald C. Moyer, who served from 1964 - 1969 as our first president.
Dr. Moyer will be remembered most for his efforts to improve the student experience and campus infrastructure of the university, which was known at the time as Nevada Southern University. Among the initiatives in which he played a key role: construction of the first residence hall and the original student union, creation of the (now internationally known and recognized) hotel administration program and the purchase of a significant portion of the land UNLV currently occupies. Further, Dr. Moyer was instrumental in pushing for Nevada Southern University's autonomy from the University of Nevada's Reno campus. His vision was realized in a 1968 reorganization, which paved the way for Nevada Southern to become the Ê×Ò³| Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³», and for Dr. Moyer to become known as "the original Rebel."
The thoughts of the UNLV campus community are with Dr. Moyer's family and friends. We extend our sincere condolences. We all have lost a wonderful and devoted leader and friend.
