What makes relationships work and how the child protection system functions in this country will be the topics of two presentations sponsored by the UNLV Women's Studies Program and the Jean Nidetch Women's Center in April.
Katy Steinkamp, a Las Vegas psychotherapist, will speak on "Spring Cleaning: Dusting Off and Airing Out Our Relationships," at noon April 15. She will examine what makes relationships work or fail, the various definitions of love, how people choose relationships, and what relationships reveal about individuals.
On April 22 at 12:30 p.m., Annette Appell, an associate professor in UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law, will discuss "Views of the Child Protection System: Protecting Children or Punishing Mothers?"
Appell will describe how the child protection system is set up in the United States and explore empirical data and narrative accounts of the system from the viewpoints of both the courts and mothers.
Both lectures will be held in the Moyer Student Union, Room 204, and are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Women's Studies Program at 895-0837.
