Dr. Rebecca Mills has been selected as UNLV's new vice president for student life following a national search, President Carol C. Harter announced today. President Harter will recommend Mills to the UCCSN Board of Regents for its approval at the board's April 20 meeting.
Mills, who came to UNLV as a member of the College of Education faculty in 1987, has been serving as interim vice president for student life since May 2000. Prior to that she served for two years as senior advisor to the president, and for three years before that as special assistant to the president for planning, assessment, and institutional research. She was assistant chair of the department of instruction and curricular studies from 1993 to 1995.
"We were fortunate to have a very strong pool of candidates," Harter said. "From that group the search committee recommended three excellent finalists. The committee's recommendation for Dr. Mills was exceptionally strong."
The president noted that, "Rebecca is very highly regarded in the Division of Student Life, among students, and, indeed, throughout the university. As interim vice president she has addressed several thorny issues -- not least those concerning our Department of Public Safety and the campus parking situation -- and has demonstrated her ability to work with faculty, staff, and students to find solutions. I know Rebecca is dedicated to helping us reach our goal of becoming a truly student-centered university, and I have every confidence that under her leadership we will see many advances in our Student Life programs and facilities."
Mills received the Ed.D. in secondary education from the University of Arkansas in 1987; she received the bachelor of science in English with honors and the master of science in English from the University of Central Arkansas.
"I'm really excited to have this opportunity to work with UNLV students and the wonderful Student Life staff," Mills said. "We have a number of projects underway and many more planned, and I am thrilled that I will be in the position to see them through."
The Division of Student Life includes the following units: Campus Recreation, Campus Housing, Campus Community Development, Disability Resource Center, Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Health Center, Student Counseling and Psychological Services, Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach, Career Services, International Student Services, McDermott Physical Education Complex, NCAA Academic Services, Public Safety, Student Development Center, Student Judicial Affairs, Women's Center, Campus Bookstore, and Food Services.
