UNLV's Center for Democratic Culture (CDC) and the William S. Boyd School of Law will sponsor a one-day forum, "Leading Social Indicators in Nevada: Quality of Life in the Silver State," on Friday, Nov. 5 at UNLV. The event is part of the CDC's Justice and Democracy Forum series and is free and open to the public.
The forum, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the William S. Boyd School of Law, will bring together scholars, politicians, and community activists to discuss various social health indicators in Nevada and to compare our vital statistics to the figures from other states. The results will serve as the basis for a statewide report on social health in Nevada.
Some of the topics to be discussed include the following:
- Child abuse, teen pregnancies, and unwed mothers
- Public education spending, school accountability, and the quality of education in Nevada
- Housing, homelessness, and urban growth
- Health care, access to medical and mental health services
- Gambling addiction and the sex industry
- Crime, race, and community relations
Forum participants will include Susan Klein, director of Clark County Family Services; Carlos Garcia, superintendent of Clark County School District; Chris Giunchigliani, Nevada assemblywoman; Billy Vassiliadis, president and CEO, R & R Advertising; Phil Kohn, Clark County public defender; Ben Graham, deputy chief district attorney; Valerie Wiener, Nevada state senator; Kathryn Landreth, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department; and Robert Schreck, senior medical director of HealthInsight, QIO.
UNLV participants will include Annette Appell, professor of law; Fred Preston, professor of sociology; Rebecca Nathanson, professor of education; Sandra Owens-Kane, professor of social work; Kate Hausbeck, professor of sociology; and Keith Schwer, director of UNLV's Center for Business & Economic Research.
The morning session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and will be moderated by UNLV law professor Mary Berkheiser. The afternoon session, which will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be moderated by Hal Rothman, professor and chair of UNLV's history department. A luncheon honoring forum participants will be held at noon and will cost $24. Reservations are required.
