The transition to widowhood and the impact impeachment has had on the institution of the presidency will be the topics of two University Forum lectures in April.
Sam Tanenhaus, a New York Times editorial board member and op-ed page editor, will present "Demonizing the Presidency: From Alger Hiss to Kenneth Starr" at 8 p.m. April 16 in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-112.
According to Tanenhaus, the efforts to impeach Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton have constituted the two most significant crises of the 20th century American presidency.
Tanenhaus will show how both cases were highly political and partisan in nature, how the media played a pivotal role in each proceeding, and how the president was demonized each time.Tanenhaus will conclude with what the larger implications are for the institution of the presidency.
On April 22, Louise Stanger, a social work lecturer at San Diego State University, will discuss "Lifting the Veil of Widowhood" at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History.
She will examine both the challenges faced and the survival strategies needed during the transition to widowhood. Stanger will also discuss the resources available and the skills that may be used to assist widows and other family members.
All University Forum lectures are free and open to the public.
The University Forum lecture series is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and underwritten by the UNLV Foundation.
