The Barbara Schick Center for Economic Education at UNLV is seeking students in grades five through 12 to participate in its spring 2000 Nevada Stock Market Game.
The game, in which classrooms of students invest hypothetical dollars, is designed to teach students about economics, finances, and math. It is open to classrooms throughout Nevada.
Last year, more than 10,000 Nevada students participated.
Students at Brinley Middle School in Las Vegas set what is believed to be a national record in the spring 1999 game by turning their initial $100,000 in hypothetical startup money into more than $900,000 in just 10 weeks, said John Mundy, Nevada state coordinator at the Schick Center. Last fall, a team from Lawrence Middle School in Las Vegas bettered that record.
Dates for this year's spring game are Feb. 14 to April 21.
Classrooms need to have Internet access in order to participate. The center will offer workshops for teachers at which stock market operations, basic financial investment skills, and research skills will be discussed. Supplemental classroom activity guides and other instructional aids also will be available.
The Nevada Stock Market Game is sponsored by the office of Secretary of State Dean Heller, which pays team fees from fines generated by securities fraud violators.
Teachers wishing to have their classes participate in the game can call Mundy at (702) 895-3904 or e-mail him at jmundy@ccmail.nevada.edu.
The Barbara Schick Center for Economic Education at UNLV is the operational arm of the Nevada Council on Economic Education.
